Hi I’m Vicki Ward,
I grew up in Research and I’ve lived in this area most of my life. My parents bought their first home in this community on a dirt road in Research, opposite a farm. They played a large role at the Research Junior Football Club where my brother played, showing the both of us the importance of community, of volunteerism and if you want something done, get in there and help. I love this area, its strong sense of community and its beautiful landscape. Coming down Fitzsimons Lane heading to the Yarra River is unique – to be so close to the city and to be hidden in this amazing tree canopy is very special. For the last 16 years I have lived in Eltham with my partner Mark, where we are raising our two daughters and spoiling our goofy dog Jack.
Having lived locally since 1973, I know this area and our people well. I know what we value and what we care about. A thriving community that feels connected to each other, preserving our natural environment, quality schools and education, good access to health care and employment and training opportunities.
These are the things I care about. The Tasmanian Dams issue in the 1980s triggered my interest in politics. It was the drastic and ugly cuts to hospitals, schools and community by former Liberal Premier Jeff Kennett that drew me to join the Labor Party.
I believe in community; we need to be there for each other. There is a very important role for government to play in supporting people to find and create opportunities for themselves as well as ensure there is a safety net for those who are struggling.
This is a wonderful community with a big heart. I love representing this area which reflects so many of my own values and core beliefs. Creating opportunities for people is very important to me, whether it is rebuilding a school such as Montmorency Secondary College, building the new Banyule-Nillumbik School at the reopened Greensborough TAFE, creating a community volunteer hub with the Eltham CFA or redeveloping the pavilion at Research Park.
