Protecting Eltham’s Past for Eltham’s Future

Monsalvat has been integral to the identity of the Eltham community, and has profoundly helped to shape our local culture. The Jörgensen family, especially the late Sigmund, son of Justus help to shape Eltham into the wonderful place that it is today.

Member for Eltham, Vicki Ward MP today announced that as part of the State Government’s Living Heritage Program Monsalvat will receive $65,000 from the $3 million fund to do structural repairs to the roof, roof replacement and repairs to rainwater goods, as well as leadlight window repairs.

Opened in 1934 by Justus Jörgensen, Monsalvat Arts Colony is home to dozens of historic buildings, houses and halls set amongst richly established gardens that can be visited by the public. Today Monsalvat is a place where emerging and established artists can present and perform their work, enjoyed by tourists and also holds an array of functions.

This grant will mean that the historic buildings at Monsalvat will be able to continue to serve the community for generations to come while protecting Eltham’s heritage and identity.

Quotes attributable to Member for Eltham, Vicki Ward MP:

Monsalvat is an iconic place within Eltham, we are indebted to the Jӧrgensen family, including my friend Sigmund Jӧrgensen, for this amazing legacy.

Quote attributable to the Executive Director of Monsalvat, Jacky Ogeil:

“The community of Montsalvat is very excited and grateful to receive a Living Heritage Grant from the State Government and Heritage Victoria for the critical conservation, restoration and fabric maintenance to several buildings on the Montsalvat campus, most notably the Matcham Skipper building complex.”

“This work will not only help facilitate urgent repairs but will help create more usable spaces for studio artists and work for local tradespeople.”

“There is always a huge flow on effect into the community with the work and good-will generated by such an initiative and support.  I would also like to acknowledge the generous support of our heritage architect Allan Willingham in helping to realise this dream.”
